Reducing Bookmark Toolbar Clutter in Chrome, Firefox and Opera

Here is a quick way to reduce the clutter in your bookmarks toolbar. I have tested this method in Google Chrome, Firefox and Opera, because the bookmarks toolbar is very similar. Internet Explorer and Safari appear to have the bookmarks/favorites toolbar built a different way and may not have the same functionality.

Basically all I am showing you to do here is to remove the text of a bookmark and only leave the favicon behind. If you have sites you frequent everyday, and are familiar with the icon, why keep the text?

Step 1: Identify a bookmark you want to remove the text from. For this sample, I will be removing the text from ping.fm.  If you notice I already have some icons with text removed.

Step 2: Right click on the bookmark and choose edit if you are using Chrome. In Opera it is ‘preferences’ and in Firefox it is ‘properties’.

Step 3: Next, a new window will pop up similar to the following, I have highlighted the Name/Title area we are looking for. All you need to do is delete the name-in this case ping.fm, then hit OK at the bottom. Completely removing the name and leaving it blank will cause the browser to not display any text with the icon.

Step 4: Here is the final result without text:

This should help reduce clutter in your bookmark toolbar and allow more sites to be visible at a time. If this is available in a browser not mentioned, please leave a comment.

Great idea. But when you have hundreds of links this takes forever. Surely somebody should be able to automate this, and also SORT them automatically every time a button is added?

This is what I did for Firefox … but what about in Chrome? I just downloaded chrome but it only shows a “blank page” icon for each bookmark … not the little blue “f” for facebook, the little “t” for twitter, and so on. Anyone know a way to change the icons on chrome?

  3. Ren, once you bookmark it you should be able to click on the iconless bookmark, and it will appear.

Miep, I would never do that to all of my bookmarks. just the ones I use daily and recognize like facebook and myspace.
